Who are Minutemen?#

Minutemen were a post-hardcore band from San Pedro, California. Formed in January 1980, their original lineup consisted of D. Boon on guitar and vocals, Mike Watt on bass and vocals, and Frank Tonche on drums, who was replaced by George Hurley after the band's second show. The band performed their first show in March 1980 [officially released on the "Georgeless EP"] and performed their last show on December 13, 1985. Just nine days after their final gig, D. Boon was killed in a car accident, ending Minutemen.

Which album to start with?#

While a lengthy listen, Minutemen's 1984 double LP Double Nickels on the Dime showcases almost everything the band has to offer. Also recommended is 1983's Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat EP.

Where to start with the live bootlegs?#

Minutemen are a Live Music Archive activated band, which means that people are permitted by the band to upload live recordings of them onto the Internet Archive, as opposed to some other bands where express permission is not given. This has resulted in over sixty live recordings uploaded to the Internet Archive over the years. Here are some of the standouts:

  • 1981-06-19 Santa Monica - a (rather poor) AUD recording notable for including the only known performances of seven "The Punch Line" tracks
  • 1981-10-26 San Francisco - a FM recording including many tracks from the Punch Line / Joy EP era
  • 1983-12-16 Philadelphia - an AMT video recording featuring 13/18 songs from "What Makes a Man Start Fires?", as well as several tracks from the then-unreleased Double Nickels on the Dime
  • 1984-07-09 Boulder - a SBD recording from less than a week after the release of Double Nickels on the Dime
